PRSSA ANNOUNCES FAMILY CAREGIVING 101 PROGRAM
AS THE 2007 BATEMAN CASE STUDY COMPETITION
NEW YORK (July 24, 2006) The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) announces the selection of Family Caregivingcit's not all up to you! (FC101) as the 2007 Bateman Competition Case Study. Sponsored by Eisai Inc., FC101 is a national public awareness program designed to encourage family caregivers to acknowledge their role and seek available assistance. The program was developed by the National Family Caregivers Association (NFCA) and the National Alliance for Caregiving (Alliance).
FC101 was chosen as the 2007 case study based upon the program's mission to help family caregivers get help, feel better and do better. One in five adults (50 million Americans) is a designated family caregiver for a chronically ill or disabled loved one who can't manage alone. "Caregiving is becoming a normative experience for American families, touching more households today than ever before," said Suzanne Mintz, president and co-founder, NFCA.
"While trying to do it all, family caregivers who fail to self-identify with their role can become overwhelmed, risking their own health. As this happens, the level of care they provide is also likely to suffer. The 2007 Bateman Competition participants will take on a communications initiative of vital importance today, and of escalating importance for tomorrow," said Gail Hunt, president, the Alliance.
Each year, the Bateman Competition is designed to challenge PRSSA Chapters to develop a public relations program for a selected client. Priority publics this year will include audiences such as family caregivers in the community, their families and their work places, as well as their public representatives and members of the media. Given Eisai's sponsorship, FC101 also gives participating teams an opportunity to participate in a corporate social responsibility program, an emerging field of public relations.
"Partnering with NFCA and the Alliance provides PRSSA members another great opportunity to practice their skills while helping an honorable cause," said Kevin Saghy, PRSSA national president. "The target audiences described should provide our members with a challenging, yet rewarding opportunity."
The Bateman Case Study Competition originated in 1973 as a National Case Study that allowed PRSSA members an opportunity to exercise the analytical skills required for public relations problem solving. In 1983, the name of the competition was changed to honor the late J. Carroll
Bateman, APR. Mr. Bateman was a past president of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), the International Public Relations Society and was very instrumental in the founding of PRSSA.
